iheartradio Music Fest Closes Strong in Vegas

Vegas iheartradioFor the Vegas iheartradio festival, a sold-out crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena witnessed the likes of Sublime with Rome, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Sting, Rascall Flats, Nicki Minaj, Black Eyed Peas, Jay-Z, and Steven Tyler, among others.

It was a study in pop music and pop culture of the current generation, with some older artists thrown in for good measure. Lady Gaga headlined the weekend, dedicated to the revamp of the iheartradio music application. Reviews from the weekend came in at everything from “I loved it!” to, “I don’t know…” so we’re betting on that it was a good concert. It was sold out, and we’d be surprised if more of these events don’t spring up, given the success. An estimated 10 million people accessed the show through the iheartradio web site, and 25,000 more showed up through the festival (capacity).

Vegas Mayweather Ortiz

Undefeated boxer Floyd “Money” Mayweather will take on Victor Ortiz for the WBC welterweight boxing title at the MGM Grand tomorrow, and if you’re in the area or able to make it, this one will be worth the money. Mayweather hasn’t boxed in 16 months and is itching to prove his doubters wrong, while 24-year-old Ortiz has the opportunity to make the 34-year-old Mayweather feel his age and ruin his undefeated record. There has been plenty of controversy surrounding Mayweather–his legal issues, his tendency to defend and talk about his accomplishments constantly–and if Ortiz pulls off a victory, it will be a fight everyone refers to. Vegas Implosion of Harmon in Court Battle

Vegas Harmon Tower to be imploded

MGM Resorts and Perini Building Company are locked in a battle that could eliminate the never-opened Harmon Tower, a luxury hotel that has not had a single guest. On Monday, MGM filed to Clark County seeking approval to use explosives to bring down the tower. Perini, the general contractor for CityCenter (where the Harmon is located on the north end) who is currently involved in a lawsuit against MGM, says they can fix the errors after inspectors found improper support, OSHA violations, and evidence from an engineering firm that if a major earthquake struck Vegas, it would collapse. MGM argues that it can’t be fixed yet Perini says that if the structure is imploded, signs of structural defects will be destroyed.

The Harmon was supposed to have 47 stories, but it was cut to 27 after inspectors found the errors in 2008, and never completed. Couple that with the recession, and MGM simply wants to cut their losses and get the approval to implode from a District Judge. If approved, it would take six months to prepare the tower for explosion and four to remove debris. There are plenty of other properties MGM owns, including Circus Circus, Mandalay Bay, and ARIA, and we encourage you to check them out while this gets resolved.

Vegas Gaming Revenue Jumps 16 Percent in June

Bellagio Vegas Gaming

Even in an uncertain economy, Las Vegas continues to grow. In the month of June, statewide gambling revenue jumped 16 percent. This was the second straight month of increases of 10 percent or more, and the largest since February 2010. Most of the revenue came from high-spending baccarat players, so it sounds like more people need to head to our gambling section and check out How to Play Baccarat. Slot machines and table games also saw a significant increase, pointing to a recovery of the Vegas area as a whole. We’re happy to see that Vegas is doing well, and if you want to head out there and get going with the gambling, we have a deal for you at the Bellagio.

Las Vegas Showgirls Protest Hotel Resort Fees

Vegas Showgirls, Caesars, protest, resort fees

(from the Associated Press)

Las Vegas headliner Marie Osmond and dozens of showgirls are protesting resort fees charged at many Las Vegas hotels.

Osmond and the roughly 50 performers from the Jubilee! show at Bally’s Las Vegas hotel-casino marched on the Las Vegas Strip Thursday morning to promote Caesars Entertainment’s no fee policy.

Caesars Entertainment claims its no-fees policy saves travelers $3 million per month. Other hotels charge anywhere from $4.50 to $24.99 per night, according to Vegas.com.

Las Vegas resort fees are usually not included in an advertised room rate. They cover hotel amenities ranging from fitness center access and internet service to valet parking.

The event Thursday morning was dubbed a gesture of solidarity with the American consumer.

Magicians Penn & Teller and other entertainers also joined the protest.
